INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- Hoosier libertarians provided no clarity to identifying the favorites from the crowded field of candidates seeking the Libertarian Party nomination for President of the United States.

A non-binding straw poll ended the 2008 LPIN convention proceedings with former GOP Congressman Bob Barr and Massachusetts professor and libertarian activist Dr. George Phillies each taking 22 votes.
The straw poll was taken following the second candidate debate of the day. Participating in the convention debates were Dr. Mary Ruwart, Senator Mike Gravel, Mark Schreiber representing Wayne Allen Root, Michael Jingozian, Dr. George Phillies and Daniel Imperato.
Phillies received the most applause from the convention attendees when he injected humor in his strong libertarian responses to issues including the U.S. role in the Middle East, education and party building. Gravel surprised delegates with his pragmatic libertarian views and history of his role in Congress.
Barr did not participate in the debate, nor have a representative for the exploratory campaign.
Following Phillies and Barr, Sen. Mike Gravel took 20 votes, Dr. Mary Ruwart, 19 votes, Wayne Roots and Mike Jingozian, 16 each. Imperato took four votes.
The results of the straw poll are unscientific and not binding toward delegates attending the national convention.
Is name recognition all we care about?
I remain astounded that Bob Barr gets ANY Libertarian support at all after his atrocious record as Congressman. I know, I know - I've been told to "get real," join the times, work with the Party, and all that. But principles don't change and Barr does not represent Libertarian principles. What are the Hoosiers Libs thinking?!
Besides, the webmaster who uploaded that photo of George Phillies should be severely punished.
My vote, if I were a Hoosier? George Phillies.

Mike Gravel Desired Higher Than 3rd 7
Agreed! He (or any member of his campaign) didn't even show up to the Indiana LP Convention! And tied for 1st? Really?
If supporters are looking for a candidate with "national coverage" how about Mike Gravel. At least he showed up in Indiana. He spoke passionately. He wants us out of the War in Iraq. He wants us to print sound money, no more borrowing from the Chinese. And has a fairly libertarian voting record in the Senate---He help end the Draft while in Senate!

Phillies Photo
Last I looked, the picture of George Phillies looked incredibly like, well....ummm.... George Phillies.
Convention delegates were allowed to vote for three acceptable presidential choices. Phillies showed much stronger in Indiana than in many of the other straw polls. Not sure I understand the problem, Maria.
We enjoyed having Dr. Phillies with us. He received some of the loudest accolades and certainly entertained with poignant comments and anecdotes.
