LPMC's Tim Maguire Wins Bourland "Light of Liberty" Award at LPIN State Convention

INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- Marion County Libertarian activist and candidate Timothy Maguire was chosen by the 2008 LPIN convention attendees as their choice for the Dr. Barbara Bourland Light of Liberty award this past weekend.

Originally from Illinois, Tim and his wife Allison moved to Indianapolis five years ago, and instantly fell in love with the city. They were married here, bought a house here, and adopted two dogs here. They have “planted their flag” in Indianapolis and are proud to call themselves Hoosiers.

Timothy's activism in the Libertarian Party has ramped up over the past three years. His first campaign for local office introduced him to the local libertarian party. He came into his own during last year's City Council race where he made a name for himself among the property tax repeal and policy reform circles. That effort landed him a position on the Indianapolis/Marion County Metropolitan Board of Zoning Appeals, overseeing property issues for a constituency numbering over 880,000.

Timothy and his wife Allison were 2007 Atlas! PAC scholarship winners selected to attend the Campaign & Elections workshop and seminar in Washington, D.C.

Born and raised in Joliet, Illinois, Timothy received a music business degree from Western Illinois University, where he was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity. He is a classically trained musician and was a member of the Cavalier Drum & Bugle Corps from 1994-1998. He is active with their church and is a senior member of his Masonic Lodge.

After working in the music industry for 5 years, Timothy decided to pursue another one of his passions, helping families keep more of their own money. Through a subsidiary of Citigroup, Timothy and Allison show families how to become debt-free and financially independent.

Having worked in the private sector for the past 10+ years, he’s learned what helps make business profitable. These same ideals can be applied to government to make it more efficient. Tim has been studying politics most of his life, and has specific training in the financial industry. Many politicians today have become entrenched, and keep policies and procedures in place simply because it has always been that way. He’s looking to bring fresh, innovative ideas into the mix; ideas that challenge the “business-as-usual” mentality and encourage others to be more fiscally responsible.

The Light of Liberty is awarded annually to the party's most recognizable volunteer for the year. The award is named in honor of long-time LPIN Chairwoman Dr. Barbara J. Bourland of Lafayette, Indiana. (For a complete list of past winners, visit the Awards List under About Us.
