Libertarians Say “cancel stimulus spending”
Submitted by lpin on Thu, 06/11/2009 - 11:19 |WASHINGTON -- America’s third largest party Wednesday called on Congress to terminate the remainder of stimulus spending citing new polling data showing a plurality of Americans now believe what Libertarians have said since January – Obama’s stimulus package is too big, too expensive and doesn’t help the economy.
“Despite a Jan. 10 White House report that the Obama spending explosion would keep unemployment under eight percent, it instead grew to 9.4 percent,” said William Redpath, Libertarian National Committee Chairman, citing both a January White House report selling the "stimulus" package, and new Labor Department statistics released last week placing unemployment at a 26-year-high, with 14.5 million workers now jobless.
“It’s no surprise that 45 percent of Americans now agree with the Libertarian Party. They know Big Government cannot create wealth and they want the stimulus spending canceled,” said Redpath.
Libertarians ask, ‘What is Obama ashamed of?’
Submitted by lpin on Wed, 03/18/2009 - 12:30 |WASHINGTON, D.C. – America’s third largest party asked Wednesday why President Obama enacted the $490 billion FY09 omnibus spending and its over 8,500 earmarks behind closed doors, and despite campaign promises to end earmark abuse.
“President Obama’s decision to hide from the media while signing this bill isn’t just a violation of his promise of transparency, it’s an attempt to avoid questions about breaking another promise to end earmark abuse,” said Libertarian National Committee Communications Director Donny Ferguson.
“He promised to end earmarks. He promised transparency. He promised fiscal responsibility. He didn’t mean a word of it. More and more Americans realize his crippling taxes and crushing debt are prescriptions for prolonged economic suffering. Now he has to hide behind closed doors to sign his pork-stuffed plan to explode wasteful spending,” said Ferguson.
Libertarian Party Congratulates President Barack Obama
Submitted by lpin on Thu, 01/22/2009 - 13:26 |WASHINGTON, D.C. -- “Congratulations to President Barack Obama on his inauguration as the 44th President of the United States," says Libertarian Party National Chairman William Redpath. "I think all Americans ultimately want what libertarians want—peace, prosperity and freedom. If President Obama and the 111th and 112th Congresses succeed in bringing us all that, they will truly be heroes to this nation."
“However, because so many people, including libertarians, are skeptical that they will do so with the current and proposed public policies," says Redpath, "the Libertarian Party will continue to exist and grow, and propose and diligently work for the policies that we think will bring this nation peace, prosperity and freedom.”
If Obama's Plan Doesn't Seem to Make Sense, it's Because it Doesn't
Submitted by lpin on Tue, 01/13/2009 - 15:47 |WASHINGTON, D.C. -- America's largest third party says that President-elect Barack Obama's spending plans are based on flawed economics. "If you think Obama's economic plans don't make sense, it's because they don't," says Libertarian Party National Chairman William Redpath.
"Americans are taking a look at Obama's economic plans and scratching their heads," says Redpath. "And, there is good reason to do so. The theory behind his plan, Keynesian economics, has been unsuccessfully tried by multiple presidential administrations in the past. It didn't work for President Hoover in the early 1930s. It didn't work for President Roosevelt in the Great Depression. It didn't work for President Ford in 1970s. Why does Obama think it will work for him now?"
LP Turns 37 Years Old
Submitted by lpin on Thu, 12/11/2008 - 22:54 |WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Libertarian Party, America's third-largest political party, is celebrating its 37th birthday.
"Since we began in 1971, we've elected hundreds of Libertarians to public office across the country," says Libertarian Party National Chairman William Redpath. "These Libertarians make a significant impact on their community, and serve as a testament to the values of the Libertarian Party. As more and more Americans look for an alternative to Republicans and Democrats, our numbers continue to grow. Until Republicans and Democrats significantly reduce the size and power of government, the Libertarian Party will be there fighting for smaller government, lower taxes and more individual freedom."
Resolution Condemning Domestic Deployment of the U.S. Military
Submitted by lpin on Mon, 12/08/2008 - 17:02 |WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The following resolution was passed by the Libertarian National Committee on Dec. 7, 2008 at its quarterly board meeting:
RESOLUTION CONDEMNING DOMESTIC DEPLOYMENT OF THE U.S. MILITARY
WHEREAS, the domestic deployment of 20,000 uniformed military personnel planned by the United States government undermines the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, which forbids the use of the military for domestic policing; and,
WHEREAS, such a deployment is an alarming example of the increasing militarization of our society; and,
WHEREAS, the increasing use of active duty military personnel, has led, and will lead, to the abuse of American civil liberties, such as violations of the Fourth Amendment; and,
Domestic Deployment of Troops Concerning
Submitted by lpin on Thu, 12/04/2008 - 13:19 |WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Libertarian Party National Chairman William Redpath calls a plan by the federal government to deploy 20,000 uniformed soldiers inside the United States "further evidence of a disturbing trend of militarism in today's society."
According to reports from the Washington Post, the federal government seeks to establish an emergency response team built on the Army's 3rd Infantry Division's 1st Brigade Combat Team, which just returned from more than a year in Iraq.
"This is not the proper role of active-duty soldiers, who have been trained and seasoned in combat," says Redpath. "When you have active-duty soldiers being substituted for National Guardsmen, you're opening yourselves up to potential violations of civil liberties during their operations. American soldiers, the finest instruments of war in the world, do not need to be patrolling the streets of American towns after hurricanes or floods. That is not their purpose as soldiers."
